Artificial Sweeteners & Fibromyalgia Flares: Is there a Connection?

You tell me. I only drink water and herbal teas, and I use real sugar in my tea, or honey.

  1. To me, real sugar is the best that you can get. I’ll never get the reasoning behind “artificial sweeteners”. If a person needs to cut down on sugar, why make a subsiitute? About twenty years ago, or more, I read in a science magazine that artificial sweeteners causes incontinence and other medical problems. That was good enough for me to realize that sugar , real sugar is the best we can get if we are looking for something sweet. The key is balance. Everything is good, when it is not overdone, or not over-used.

Need to cut down on sugar? The best way is to cut down, not to substitute. That’s my opinion. (Disclaimer , smiles). I’m not a doctor, nor a health professional. This note is for sharing ideas and for entertainment only) .

    • Diabetics often turn to alternatives because it’s easier than cutting something out of their life (My cousin actually complained that the sparkling water I recommended to her “isn’t sweet”. No, but it IS flavored and tastes great. She tried putting Splenda in it and the bottle exploded! I was mortified at the stupidity of that move.), but sugar alcohol, which is in a lot of sugarless or sugar-free products, is worse for you than a little real sugar.

Anyone who claims they live a completely sugar-free life has obviously never factored in that carbs turn to sugar and that fruit has natural sugar in it.

I agree with you that it’s about balance. We won’t discuss that Cookie Butter from Trader Joe’s is my current kryptonite and I have yet to say no to a piece of dark chocolate. A girl’s gotta have a few vices or life isn’t worth living.
